The real History of the Flatbush Development Corporation

If you go to the homepage of the Flatbush development Corporation, you get a history of the organization. The Flatbush Development Corporation started way after 1975. There was a gentleman in the area called Michael Weiss, who in the 70s started to notice the deterioration of the area. He approached homeowners about not selling their property during period of change due to blockbusting. I had interviewed many of them. When this failed, he got a grant, and he focused on Newkirk Plaza. As time went on more people became interested in what Mr. Weiss was doing and Corporation formed.

THE FDC and Mr. Weiss starts building Newkirk plaza.

Eventually Marty Markowitz, who represented the area, formed the Flatbush Tenant’s Council in the 80s as the area deteriorated on Newkirk Avenue. That is why they say Marty Markowitz cofounded the FDC After the horrible 80s both Flatbush Tenant’ Council and the FDC formed by Mr. Weiss opened up shop on Newkirk Avenue. ITs main focus was Newkirk Plaza, stopping blockbusting, and Tenants.
